"Vernon 'Vern' La-Roy Bell was born on September 29, 1946 in Oakland, California. He then moved to the Los Angeles area where his life began. After attending grade school, he attended and graduated from Manual Arts High School. His love and heart for Fashion Design led him to Los Angeles Trade Tech where he attended for two years.
Being a jack of all trades, Vern knew how to get a skilled job, which led him to a position at Douglas Aircraft. He spent two years working there and was then drafted in the Army for two years. Upon completion, Vern returned to Douglas Aircraft for an additional two years.
Vernon's life took a complete change, thanks to the help from his family, he received rehabilitation from Government services and spent time working for the Los Angeles Veteran Administration in the Pharmacy Department. This is where would meet the love of his life, Belinda. He pursued Belinda for some time but with the help of his coworkers and the sound of his deep charming voice, he won her interest. Soon after, they were planning a Las Vegas wedding. With smiles of joy, happiness, thanking and praising The Lord, this led to 19 years of happy matrimony together. They blended their small families together, he having one son and Belinda's one son. He was so proud of his grandchildren of which had two and one great grandchild. There was nothing that he wouldn't do for them.
Belinda and Vern resided in Los Angeles for some time until they decided to retire. They retired in at Banning Sunlakes Senior Gated Community, where they could relax. They spent 10 years together there. They both enjoyed serving The Lord but found it hard to find a church home until they found Sunrise Church. There, Vern was able to serve as an Usher and receive the ministry and teachings of Pastor Eric. Vern found joy in ushering at Sunrise Church.
Around December 2024, Vern became sick. These months were very difficult and long-suffering for Vern. He lost his battle with lung cancer on June 9, 2025. The Lord said, "no more pain, no more tears" and called him to rest.
Vern enjoyed fishing, playing dominoes and billiards;so much so that he won a trophy from playing dominoes. He even had his own personal pool cues. Vern never liked confrontation or quarrels, and he always expressed himself in a caring way to make you feel compassion and love. He was funny, humorous, and very complimentary. A truly good soul. He will be dearly missed.
Vernon is preceded by death by his mother, father, brother, and a host of family friends and cousins.
Vernon is survived by: Belinda Bell (Wife), Pete Antoine (Brother), Vernon Jr. Mitchell Bell (Son), Aron Mitchell (Grandchild), Tierra Mitchell (Grandchild), and Kingston Mitchell (Great Grandson)."
