Stephen Michael Ortiz, a cherished and respected member of the Banning community, passed away peacefully on October 15, 2024, at the age of 35. Born on November 25, 1988, in Redlands, California, Stephen's life was one marked by service, compassion, and a deep commitment to his family and friends.
Stephen grew up in a loving home in Banning, California, with his parents, Samson and Barbara Ortiz, who instilled in him values of generosity and community spirit. He was a beloved brother to Samson JL Ortiz and RoseAnn Carrillo, and brother-in-law to John Carrillo. His role as a devoted father to Bernard Stephen Michael Ortiz was the relationship he cherished most. The family bond was further enriched by the guidance of his grandmother, Lila Sanchez, and the joy brought by his niece, Aurora Carrillo.
A graduate of the Art Institute for Culinary Arts as he loved to cook and especially loved to eat. At Crafton Hills College, Stephen's dedication to learning and service was evident in his studies as an EMT and his active participation in the Student Senate. His educational journey was not just about personal advancement but also about how he could better serve those in need.
Stephen's professional life was a reflection of his altruistic nature. He was a guiding light in numerous organizations, including the Youth Group Ministry, where he mentored young individuals, and Carol's Kitchen, feeding those less fortunate. His commitment to his faith was evident in his role as an altar server, an experience that allowed him to give back to his church community.
His generosity knew no bounds, as he regularly donated blood and platelets to LifeStream, donated his hair to cancer patients and dedicated his time to the American Red Cross demonstrating his desire to make a tangible difference in the lives of others.
Stephen's legacy is one of unwavering service and humanity. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, his boundless energy, and his ability to inspire those around him to act with kindness and purpose. His absence will be deeply felt, not only by his family but by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Stephen was preceded in death by grandparents Lupe Sanchez, Joe and Margaret Ortiz, Uncle Anthony Sanchez Sr.
As we say goodbye to Stephen, we celebrate a life lived with honor, love, and a deep commitment to others.
