Maria Magdalena Sanchez, nee Leonhardt
Maria Magdalena Sanchez passed away at the age of 93 in Cathedral City, California on Thursday, January 4, 2024. Born on February 25, 1930, to Heinriech Leonhardt and Margareta Gaubatz Leonhardt in Frankfurt, West Germany. During her childhood she resided in Sprendlingen, Kreis off., West Germany.
On January 5, 1952, Maria married Henry Sanchez of Cabazon, California in Sprendlingen. Henry "the Love of her life" was in the United States Air Force and they were stationed in many locations to include Germany, Spain, France, South Carolina and Travis Air Force Base, Fairfield, California. Henry retired from the Air Force, and they made their home in Fairfield. Maria owned and operated a Winchell's Donut Shop. Sadly, Henry passed on August 22, 1998, but Maria continued to live in Fairfield. Maria moved to Banning, California in 2020 to be with her niece/caregiver Doreen Jo "Miranda" Reynolds and her extended family.
Henry and Maria had no children, but they were involved in Little League of Fairfield, He coached the young boys, and she was team Mom and enjoyed baking cookies for the teams. They were involved and volunteered with the Lion's Club International for many years. Her hobbies were many over the years, crocheting, embroidery, gardening, painting, traveling and making things from recycling just about anything. She was an accomplished Artist.
Maria was a member of the Fairfield Presbyterian Church for many years where she enjoyed volunteering with the food pantry and attending Sunday services and fellowship. She was also a member of the Gardening Club, Art Society, and a Book Club.
She was preceded by the Love of her Life whom she was married to for 46 years Henry Sanchez, her parents, many members of her extended family, 6 Brothers in law (John, Manuel, Pete, James, Sam Sanchez and Ted Miranda, Sr.), 3 Sisters in law (Maggie Miranda, Irene Anderson Scully and Frances Walker), and Nephew Robert A. Reynolds, Sr.
She is survived by her loving niece Doreen Jo Miranda Reynolds of Banning, her brother-in-law Louis Sanchez (Audrey), Sister-in-law Doddie Sanchez of Banning and numerous nieces and nephews.
Maria chose to be cremated with the following Arrangements: Memorial Service Friday, January 19, 2024, 4:00 p.m. at Wiefels and Sons Mortuary, 50 E. Nicolet St., Banning. A luncheon/reception will be held at Club Latino Americano, 401 E. Livingston, Banning immediately following the service. Her final resting place will be at the Fairfield Memorial Park in Fairfield, California. Her remains will be scattered with her husband at a later date.
