Leon Oliver Rowe transitioned peacefully to be with the Lord on July 11, 2025, at the age of 73. He was born on October 31, 1951, in Houston, Texas, the third child and only son of Leon Rowe Sr. of Arkansas and Susan Mae Olier of Louisiana.
Early Years
Leon's mother's side of the family was Catholic, while his father was not. Growing up in a largely Catholic community, he learned early how to navigate differing perspectives with grace. He attended Catholic school and served as an altar boy for several years-an experience that instilled in him a deep respect for faith and service, values that would remain with him for life.
In his early teens, Leon moved to Los Angeles, California, to live with his oldest sister, Yvonne Williams. He attended George Washington Preparatory High School, where he began developing the discipline and leadership qualities that would define his life. Leon loved music and had a natural talent for singing. A highlight of his youth was performing with his high school vocal group, The Contemporary 5, which won several talent shows.
While in school, a teacher noticed his exceptional spatial skills and ability to visualize how things fit together-an aptitude often associated with dyslexia, a challenge he overcame thanks to caring teachers who taught him how to adapt. These talents earned him a coveted spot in a special architectural training program offered to only a select few students. Though he began working for a major Los Angeles architectural firm, Leon soon realized a desk job wasn't for him. Loving the outdoors, he became a master welder, working in shipyards and even performing underwater riveting on ships.
Military Service
Leon answered the call to serve his country with honor in the United States Army. From 1971 to 1972, he served at the U.S. Ordnance Center & School at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, where he completed the Army's welding training course. Leon graduated at the top of his class, earning the prestigious Distinguished Graduate Award-a day he would never forget.
From 1972 to 1977, Leon was stationed in Vicenza, Italy. His honorable service earned him the National Defense Service Medal and recognition as an expert marksman. While in Italy, Leon embraced the culture-falling in love with the food, music, art, and the warmth of its people. He became fluent in Italian and even had the chance to drive a luxury Italian sports car for a couple of years, often saying the experience felt like a dream.
Civilian Life
After his military service, Leon returned briefly to Houston, where he met and married Ora Jameson. Though the marriage ended, it blessed him with a son, Christopher Michael Rowe, his "spitting image," whom he loved dearly. Leon later moved to Mississippi, then back to Houston, before eventually settling in California, where he lived for the rest of his life.
Leon pursued a wide range of careers, excelling in hospitality after attending the Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. He also served briefly as a firefighter before ultimately embracing entrepreneurship. He founded Rowe's Pros Cleaning Service, which he led with integrity and dedication until his retirement just one year ago. Leon also wrote and published books to guide aspiring entrepreneurs. While serving a major client-the prestigious World Savings Center high-rise in Brentwood, CA-he hired young people from his church so they could gain professional experience in an upscale environment and earn more than they would in fast-food jobs.
Love and Family
On December 24, 1989, Leon married his sweetheart, best friend, and the love of his life, Donna Anne Rideout. They built a marriage marked by deep affection, shared faith, and joyful companionship. Together they attended and served in church, traveled, entertained guests, watched their favorite shows, cooked together, and laughed daily.
Leon lived with passion and purpose, never content to be bored. He became fluent in Creole French-taught by his beloved Papa-fluent in Italian, and proficient in Spanish, using his language skills to connect meaningfully with others. He also enjoyed gardening, reading, writing, learning new skills, traveling, and testing his "Pit Master" skills on family and friends-a talent learned from his father, who owned a barbecue restaurant.
Faith and Service
A devoted Christian, Leon loved the Lord with all his heart. He served joyfully in his church choir and praise team, even learning to play piano through an online program when he heard that his church needed a keyboardist. His music brought encouragement and inspiration to many.
Leon also served through a hotline phone ministry with Calvary Chapel South Bay, in partnership with the local police department. Trained to handle calls from people in crisis, he offered prayer, compassion, and a listening ear. Over time, callers began asking specifically for "Dr. Rowe"- he couldn't seem to convince them he wasn't an actual doctor. His ability to sense when someone was hurting and to offer genuine care was one of his many God-given gifts.
Legacy
Leon brought joy into every life he touched. His big heart, bright smile, and faithful service-both to his country and his church-made him a shining example of dedication, love, and faith. Though he has left this world, his memory lives on in every hymn sung, every language spoken, every life he touched, and every act of kindness he offered.
He will be deeply missed-and always remembered with love.
