James Kohama, was born on December 3, 1948, in Sapporo, Japan and passed away on May 24, 2024, at the age of 75. He is survived by his two sons, Jason Kohama, 48 and Troy Kohama, 45 both of Banning, California; his grandchildren, Madalynn Kohama and Colton Kohama of Banning; and his two sisters, Mary and Kathy Kohama.
James passed away at Riverside Community Hospital with family by his side. James moved to North Carolina as a child, where he pursued his education and attended some college before feeling the call to serve his country. He enlisted in the Marines and bravely served in the Vietnam War.
After returning home from the war, James met and fell in love with Gwen Burghardt. They married in 1974. The couple settled in Banning, California where they raised their two sons. James and Gwen eventually got divorced. James was a dedicated single father raising his two sons while working for San Gorgonio Pass Hospital for 20 plus years. In 1984, James found a second chance at love with Dixie Garten Kohama who passed away in 2008.
Known to friends and family as Jim, he was always seen with a smile. He had a passion for fishing, camping, cooking & enjoyed frequent trips to the casino, and was a true foodie who loved good food and Coca-Cola.
James led a quiet life, deeply loving his family more than anything. He will be dearly missed but never forgotten by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held to celebrate James' life, with details to be announced.
