Dorothy Velma (Bakits) Mazuran, a pillar of strength and inspiration, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2024, in Arcadia, California. She was born on October 24, 1922, in Glendale, California, to Alexander and Wilhelmina Bakits. Dorothy had a remarkable journey through life and left a lasting impression on the hearts of those she touched.
After graduating from Hoover High School as part of the class of 1939, Dorothy attended Glendale College. Her fierce patriotism led her to enlist in the US Navy on December 22, 1943. She served diligently as part of the US Navy Waves from January 23, 1944, to March 18, 1946. Her time in the service was a significant chapter in her life, shaping her indomitable spirit and solidifying her love for her country. She often grew nostalgic about her service days, holding them close to her heart as one of her proudest achievements.
After the Navy, Dorothy joined the workforce at Lockheed Aircraft Company. For 25 years, she was a dedicated employee in the Technical Publications Department as a Manual Publication Analyst, continuing to support the military as a civilian.
On June 19, 1946, Dorothy's life was enriched when she married John Mazuran, who predeceased her in 2002. They built a life together steeped in affection and mutual respect. Together they had one child, their beloved daughter, Emily Kranz.
Dorothy's devotion to her family knew no bounds, and she was blessed with an expanding tree of love that included her cherished grandchildren, Clayton Kopecky and Carrie Kopecky-Scott (Mike); and her four great-grandchildren, Emmy, Howie, Ava, and Abby, who added immeasurable joy to her life.
Her absence is profoundly felt, and yet, the legacy of Dorothy Velma Bakits-Mazuran continues in the ways she shaped lives, built enduring friendships, and directed her determination and courage. United in grief, her family celebrates the incredible story of a woman whose life extended well beyond the years she lived. Dorothy's principles and the rich experiences she shared have left a mosaic of memories that will continue to guide and comfort her family and friends.
Dorothy will be laid to rest with Navy Burial Honors, Friday September 6, 2024 1:30 PM at Desert Memorial Park, 31705 DaVall Dr, Cathedral City, Ca 92234
